Education and the Community
Chula Vista’s Northwest Civic Association’s Town Hall meeting for August is Education and the Community. Monday, August 10th at the community room at Seniors on Broadway, 845 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91910 at 6 p.m. Presenters include representatives from the Chula Vista Elementary School District & Sweetwater Union High School District. Discussion will include strengthening the relationships between the local government and businesses, the residents/parents and the student population, and how each can contribute to the shared interests in providing a healthy hometown. Henry’s Market Changing Lives in Chula Vista
On Sunday, August 9, Henry’s Markets in Chula Vista will donate 2% of the day’s sales to help local children affected by abuse and domestic violence. Henry’s Markets located in: Henry’s Marketplace: 690 3rd Avenue, Chula Vista CA 91910 and Henry’s Marketplace : 878 Eastlake Parkway, Chula Vista 91914 will be celebrating their anniversary by supporting South Bay Community Services domestic violence shelters and Mi Escuelita Therapeutic Preschool for children affected by abuse and domestic violence.
In addition, Henry’s and SBCS will have a fun snack booth with roasted corn, popcorn and ice cream – only 50 cents each – for community to enjoy.
South Bay Community Services is a non-profit organization providing services, support and opportunities for over 50,000 individuals and families annually in the South San Diego County.
Summer Sol – Masquerade Festival Fundraiser is Set to Sizzle:
Young Audiences’ annual fundraiser to benefit arts education in San Diego County
Young Audiences of San Diego will host its 5th annual Summer Sol fundraiser on Saturday, August 15th, 2009 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The event will be take place at the McMillin Event Center / NTC Promenade at Liberty Station in Point Loma. Tickets are $45 per person, register by August 1st to receive two complimentary raffle tickets per person with your paid admission. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit arts education programs throughout San Diego County.
“We’re confident that the 2009 Summer Sol – Masquerade Festival won’t disappoint,” says Hilliard Harper, Executive Director of Young Audiences. “This event is our sole fundraiser for the year and a great opportunity to showcase some of the talented artists that Young Audiences is privileged to work with.”

Join State Senator Denise M. Ducheny, Mayor Cheryl Cox, Principal Jan Godfrey, faculty, staff, students, parents and community supporters for a ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 10:30 am to mark the commencement of Prop O construction at Chula Vista Middle School.
National City Relay for Life Cancer Walk
The American Cancer Society’s National City’s Relay for For Life is scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, August 8th & 9th at Kimball Park. Relay for For Life is a 24 hour campout and walk-a-thon that empowers the community to take part in the fight against cancer while honoring its survivors and remembering loved ones who were lost to the disease.
There are a variety of sponsorship opportunities for local businesses, both large and small. There is no fee to participate but prior registration is suggested.
Cancer survivors will be honored in a special lap around the track following opening ceremonies at 9-10:00 a.m. including a symbolic release of doves. The basic idea of the Relay is to keep at least one team member moving on the track during the entire 24 hour period. The event has the ambiance of group campout, with teams competing to decorate their campsites. Entertainment and activities for all ages are scheduled throughout the day and night. One of the highlights of the Relay for For Life is the 9:00 p.m. luminaria ceremony in which candle-lit luminaries decorated with the names of cancer survivors and those lost to cancer are placed around the track to light the way for walkers.
Clases para padres que están pasando por un divorcio, ahora disponibles gratuitamente en idioma español
Especialmente diseñadas para padres que se encuentran en estos momentos en proceso de divorcio o padres divor-ciados quienes en la actualidad tienen muchos problemas tratando de resolver conflictos, se encuentran cordialmente invitados a participar en un programa de asistencia gratuita que consiste en 12 semanas de “Clases para padres para evitar un divorcio que sea altamente conflictivo”.
Estudios dan como resultado que los niños de padres divorciados que cooperan de mejor manera en un proceso de divorcio se ven mejor favorecidos. Por otro lado, padres que se encuentran involucrados en un divorcio altamente conflictivo difí-cilmente logran beneficiar de alguna forma a sus hijos al pasar por este proceso. Este programa ofrece alternativas para que en equipo ambos padres edu-quen a sus hijos realizando un esfuerzo “paralelo”.
Los participantes aprenderán técnicas de comunicación para construir relaciones saludables; para que obtengan más confianza en sí mismos y decisiones, en lugar de oponerse al sistema de corte; identifica estrategias para ayudar a los padres a evitar y eliminar situaciones que se dan en un proceso de divorcio altamente conflictivo; se proveerán también técnicas de relajamiento para ayudar a los padres para que durante los procesos y dictámenes de custodia legal manteniendo al frente el bienestar de sus hijos como objetivo fundamental.
El curso será de 2 horas diarias y tendrá una duración de 12 semanas; el programa dará inicio a las 9:30am. el día lunes 10 de Agosto en el Centro Comunitario de San Ysidro y a las 6:30pm el Miércoles 12 de Agosto en San Ysidro Elementary School District Office.
