On Friday, March 23, experimental curatorial group Art Fist Collective is proud to present My Little Art Show, a benefit art exhibit to aid Save Our Heritage Organisation’s efforts to obtain historic designation for downtownSan Diego’s Caliente Racetrack mural, located on the side of the historic California Theatre.

In keeping with the horse theme, twenty-five local artists, along with nationally-renown My Little Pony artist Requiem were each given a My Little Pony figurine to reinterpret and revamp. Proceeds from their sale will helpSOHO pay for an independent historic study on the mural.

Art Fist Collective’s Enrique Limón says, “The support not just of the artists involved in the show, but the San Diego community in general who have rallied around this cause is overwhelming, and it demonstrates just how much San Diego celebrates public art like the Caliente racetrack mural, and the city’s rich cross-border history.”

“To erase the mural, would be to foolishly try to erase that rich history,” he added.

Bruce Coons, executive director forSOHO, said that “the close call of having this historic mural painted over garnered the attention of the arts community. While historic signage has long been considered integral to interpreting a city’s past and most major cities have a historic sign ordinance or program,San Diegodoes not. Art Fist Collective has taken up the charge to save the Caliente mural and has already collected a thousand signatures on a petition and plan to bring forth a historic report to the city to designate and place protections on the sign that so many love.”
