Logan Heights Honors America’s Service Men & Women “Honor Them by Remembering”

 On Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2008, the Logan Heights Veterans Memorial (LHVM) Committee in partnership with the Chicano Park Steering Committee broke ground on the future site of the Logan Heights Veterans Memorial.

 The committee would like to extend an invitation to interested Artists in the San Diego community to submit their Memorial Monument renderings to the Memorial Design Sub-Committee.

 Artist submission form and monument criteria are available on the website at info@ lhveteransmemorial.com. Entries must be submitted to the Memorial Design Sub-Committee no later than November 2, 2009. No exceptions. The winner of the design competition will be announced after December 7, 2009 on the Logan Heights Veterans Memorial website.

 This memorial when completed will stand as a testament to the courage, valor, and sacrifices made by our service men and women. The memorial will honor the veterans, and soldiers of the very diverse community of Logan Heights and all of San Diego. The monument will bring an important and educational component to the families of not only Logan Heights and the greater San Diego area, but also to the citizens of the world who visit our fair city. It will be a place to pay homage, to reflect, and to remember.

The International Community Foundation Center in Partnership with the Resource Conservation District to Host Groundbreaking for Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center in National City

 While most people will be barbecuing this Labor Day, one group is having a picnic to address childhood obesity by re-introducing people to the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables in a neighborhood setting.

 The International Community Foundation Center in partnership with the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego (RCD) is celebrating the groundbreaking for Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center, an edible organic garden for children and adults by hosting a potluck picnic on the lawn of a historic home in the heart of National City, CA on Labor Day, September 7, 2009. Guests are encouraged to bring a healthy, home-cooked dish to share.

 The event is in conjunction with Slow Food USA’s “Time for Lunch” program, a national campaign to urge Congress to provide America’s children with real food at school – food that is delicious, less processed, and grown in a more sustainable way. Over 280 Eat-Ins have been organized in communities across the country to raise awareness about the reauthorization of the federal Child Nutrition Act. More than 30 million children participate in the National School Lunch Program, which is funded by the Child Nutrition Act.

 The location where the event will take place is symbolic. National City has some of the highest childhood obesity rates in the state and a majority of the students in nearby schools come from families who are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged. Olivewood Gardens will be a destination for children from the surrounding urban community to have hands-on interaction in the production of organic fruit and vegetables. Harvested produce will be used for nutrition classes, cooking demonstrations and workshops as part of the Learning Center’s program to provide nutrition education and lessons in sustainable agriculture to students attending school in southern San Diego County and local community residents. By practicing positive nutritional choices over the long-term, local children and community members may reduce their risk of chronic diseases associated with overweight including diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

 Guests are asked to bring their own plate/cup/utensil to reduce waste, plus a blanket or lawn chair for seating.

Back to School: Escondido Public Library Offers Free Online Homework Tutoring

 Homework help for Escondido students is now just a click away. The Escondido Public Library is offering free online homework tutoring for students in grades 3 through 12 through Brainfuse, an online tutoring company.

 Students and parents may use home or library computers for a live anonymous connection to an expert tutor from 1 to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Core subjects offered are math, including Algebra I, II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus; science, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science; social studies and English. Students may also submit an essay, book report or paper and receive a critique along with suggestions for improvement through the Brainfuse “Writing Lab” feature. The U.S. based tutors are certified in the grade level and selected subject matter. Spanish speaking tutors are available during all service hours.

 Tutor and student meet in a student-friendly online classroom where they .can chat through a secure IM application. Classroom work is shown right on the shared screen. Students can also save, archive and print sessions for later reference.

 All that is required is a library card and a computer for connection to a qualified tutor.
