San Ysidro Centennial

As the San Ysidro Centennial Year winds down, the border town prepares for its final event. A photo exhibit that will visually tell the story of this amazing 100 year old town. The exhibit boasts over 200 photographs, most of which belong to the personal archives and family albums of long time San Ysidro Residents. The photographic exhibition will be on display at Casa Familiar’s THE FRONT, A Collaborative of Art, Culture, Design & Urbanism for two weeks. The Opening Reception which will take place Friday Sept 11th 2009 from 6pm to 9pm will provide guests with the unique opportunity to take a trip down memory lane and experience a San Ysidro from a different time through photos and conversation.

Celebrated throughout the year, the San Ysidro Centennial festivities created a surge of community pride and belonging amongst the residents of the small town. The Centennial Year was kicked off with a press conference attended by dignitaries from both sides of the border. A San Ysidro Centennial Celebration Festival took place in May at Larsen Field and was attended by seven thousand community residents. The festival included a full entertainment lineup, vendors, children’s games, a lowrider car show and much more. In August, the San Ysidro Boulevard was teeming with excitement as the Centennial Parade cruised by. With over 45 entries, the small town of San Ysidro had not celebrated, like they did this year in over 25 years.

San Diego Motorcyclists Organize to Help Injured Rider

He lost both legs and his life was changed in the blink of an eye. Ben Rios, age 27, is now recovering from serious injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on August 18 while riding on Fire Mountain Drive near El Camino Real in Oceanside. Motorcycle enthusiasts from throughout San Diego are coming together to help buoy Ben’s spirits and defray his mounting medical expenses.

Organized by fellow riders on SanDiegoSportBikeMeet up.com, the Ben Rios Benefit Poker Run will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2009, starting at 9:30 a. m. at Dal-ton’s Road House, 751 Center Drive, in San Marcos. To participate, just show up and register. Cost is $25 per rider, with $20 of each entry going directly to the Ben Rios Benefit Fund, and $5 going into the pot given to the event’s winning participants.

The route is approximately 60 miles and will begin and end at Dalton’s Road House. Riders will be provided a route map and a playing card upon registration. Riders will then follow the route map, picking up additional playing cards at stops along the way. All riders will return to the starting point and present their “Poker” hand of collected cards. The pot will be split between the holders of the highest and lowest poker hand.
