The San Diego Public Library will screen live Women’s World Cup Soccer matches during the tournament held in Germany from June 26 to July 17, 2011. San Diego residents are invited to come view the games in a safe atmosphere and companionable fellowship at 11:30 am on Tuesday, July 5, and, in progress, at 12 noon on Wednesdays, July 6 and 13, in the auditorium of the Central Library, located at 820 E Street in downtown San Diego.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is recognized not only as the most important international competition in soccer (or football, as the game is known internationally), but in all of women’s sport. Contested every four years, the first Women’s World Cup tournament was held in 1991, sixty-one years after the first World Cup tournament for men in 1930.

The competition format features sixteen teams competing for the winner’s trophy. Of local import, both the USA and Mexico will be present at the contest. Teams from both the USA and current defending champion Germany have won the tournament twice, and Norway once.  Canada will host the next Women’s World Cup in 2015.

Learn about other events at the San Diego Public Library’s Central Library and 35 branches, find links to numerous additional resources, or search for materials in the Library’s catalog online at www.sandiegolibrary.org.
