Applications for Chula Vista Interim City Councilmember

 The City of Chula Vista will accept applications for the appointment of an Interim City Councilmember to serve for the duration of John McCann’s prolonged absence from the City Council while he is on military duty. Applications will be accepted beginning August 7 through 5 p.m., August 31, 2009.

 Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a Chula Vista resident and a registered voter.

 Applications will be available online August 7 through August 31, 2009, at www.chulavista ca.qov and at the City Clerk’s office, 276 Fourth Avenue (619) 691-5041. Each applicant must submit to the City Clerk’s office by U.S. Mail or hand delivery a completed Interim City Councilmember application, including an Economic Interests Disclosure form and a resume by 5 pm, Monday, August 31, 2009. Applications will not be accepted after 5 pm, August 31, 2009.

 All applications and resumes will be forwarded to the Mayor and City Council. The Mayor and City Council will submit an unrestricted number of name(s) of applicants they want to interview. Applicants receiving two or more nominations will be scheduled for interviews.

 Applicants will be interviewed in a City Council meeting. When interviews have ended, the City Council will deliberate in public until an applicant receives at least three confirming votes.

Humberto Peraza Declares Candidacy for Chula Vista City Council

 Humberto Peraza announced that he has formed a campaign committee to run for Chula Vista City Council.

 “As a young father, I want to do everything possible to make Chula Vista a better place for our families,” said Peraza. “As a member of the City Council, I will focus on delivering basic services, such as police, fire and parks, while we balance the budget. In these tough times, I will make job creation and revitalizing our local economy a top priority.”

 The primary will be held in June 2010 and the runoff, if necessary, will be held in November 2010. Humberto Peraza is running for Chula Vista City Council Seat 2, currently held by Councilmember John McCann. McCann is unable to run for reelection due to term limits.

 Peraza attended public schools in San Diego and graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

 Peraza, 35, lives with his wife Lisa and sons Ben, 5, and Dylan, 2.

Hon. Assemblymember Mary Salas Endorses David Alvarez

 Assemblymember Mary Salas has endorsed David Alvarez in his campaign to become the next Councilmember from San Diego’s Eighth District. This endorsement continues to build momentum for Alvarez.

 “I’m proud to have the endorsement of a leader of the caliber of Assemblymember Mary Salas. She is a true leader in our community, and she knows the the communities of District 8” said Alvarez.

 For her part, Assemblymember Salas indicated, “David is a young man that is poised to usher in a new generation of leadership in District 8. He has my full support and encouragement in his effort to be the next councilman.”

Politics in Paradise

 The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce is proud to present its first ever, “Politics in Paradise” event at the Water Conservation Garden in Rancho San Diego on Friday, August 21, 2009. The event begins at 6:00 in the evening with a social hour followed by the program at 7:00 p.m. The event is being billed as an open forum and a final opportunity to interact with elected officials before they return to Sacramento and Washington D.C.

 The event is open to the public at a cost of $50. The initial social hour will provide an opportunity for one-on-one interaction with the elected officials while the structured forum will allow guests to pose questions to participants in a panel-type format. Medical Marijuana Forum

 A community forum on medical marijuana will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday August 27th, in the Chula Vista Civic Center Library Auditorium. In July, the Chula Vista City Council approved a 45-day moratorium on the establishment of marijuana dispensaries in the city to give them further time to study the issue. For info (619) 307-3460.
