The San Ysidro School District will not issue any layoff notices, or pink slips, to teachers or classified employees this year, becoming one of the few districts in the county to do so.

The district accomplished this by spending down reserves as well as careful planning and maximization of resources. It is also using an early retirement incentive this year.

“We are one of very few districts in the county that is not giving out layoff notices, furlough days, cutting employee work year or instructional days from our calendar, and much less rolling back salaries for teachers and staff,” said Superintendent Manuel H. Paul.

Superintendent Paul continued to say that “our Governing Board is very sensitive to our employee needs and want to protect our hardworking teachers and staff for the outstanding work they are doing to improve student achievement in our district.”

The San Ysidro School District is a Preschool through grade 8 district with five elementary schools, one K-8 elementary school, and one middle school 7-8. The district serves more than 5,550 students and is projected to double in the next 10 years. Recently, two of its schools were named California Distinguished Schools.
