As Semester Opens, College’s Fiscal Discipline, Smart Academic Planning Translate Into 34 More Class Sections for Fall 2010 Term
As its Fall 2010 semester opened, Southwestern College today announced more classes for its students. For Fall 2010, the college will offer 2,002 class sections, an increase of 34 class sections from 2009. The announcement comes as other California community colleges are canceling classes and cutting back on faculty and staff.
“Southwestern College is proud to keep expanding the dream of college for our community. We acted swiftly to give our students more options during these tough economic times – and our decisive action is paying off,” Dr. Raj K. Chopra, Superintendent/President of Southwestern College, said. “With the leadership of our Vice Presidents, Deans and Department Chairs, we keep making decisions that put students first.”
The increased class sections for Fall 2010 come in several academic areas, including basic skills, and transfer and career-oriented classes. Both online and face-to-face classes will be offered. Currently, the College’s classes are more than 80 percent full, with students continuing to enroll.
“We effectively managed our enrollment and are pleased to offer our students a more robust fall schedule,” Dr. Mark Meadows, Vice President for Academic Affairs, said. “We will continue to offer the programs and services that help our students achieve success.”
This announcement is one of several recent Southwestern College announcements meant to expand educational opportunities for students. In July, Southwestern College announced $127,985 in new federal funding for its Clean Energy Workforce Training Program and its Green Building Pre-Apprenticeship Program, both designed to prepare individuals for jobs in San Diego’s energy efficiency and green building industries.
The College also announced five new certificate programs in Automotive, Event Planning, Landscape Construction, Recording Arts and Web Design. The five courses are designed to give students an understanding of entrepreneurship and small business management, including development, planning, organization and operations. The new certificates will be available beginning Fall 2010.
