mun2, the preeminent voice for bicultural Latinos in America, today announced the creation of mun2 Sports. This uniquely American programming initiative has been developed to capture the wide-ranging sports interests of mun2’s core audience and will launch on February 20, 2010. The announcement was made by Jacqueline Hernández, Chief Operating Officer, Telemundo.

“Young Latino Americans are looking for sports programming which responds directly to their needs as viewers,” said Hernández. “mun2 Sports will provide young Latino Americans with a new option in sports coverage, focusing not only on soccer, the sport which characterizes their unique status among the youth of America, but also the sports that they love.”

Under the leadership of Jorge Hidalgo, Senior Executive Vice President, Telemundo Sports, his Emmy Award-winning Deportes Telemundo team and Flavio Morales, Vice President, Programming, mun2, the youth network will provide over 20 Saturday night soccer matches highlighting the best Mexico has to offer. Featured matches will include Futbol Liga Mexicana simulcasts and exclusive matches showcasing such teams as Chivas de Guadalajara. There will also be opportunities to broadcast Mexican National Team games when they play in the U.S.

The initial launch of mun2 Sports will feature a weekly half-hour show on Sunday nights called “The mun2 Sports Arena,” a fast-paced sports recap presented by bilingual hosts in a casual format and customized to highlight the favorite sports and athletes of young Latino Americans.

In addition to “The Arena,” mun2 Sports will feature weekend “mun2 Timeouts,” sports briefs which will provide up to the minute updates during other regularly scheduled mun2 programming. The “mun2 Time-outs” are available to sponsors.

“Telemundo is the authoritative Spanish-language sports broadcaster, and we are thrilled to expand this acclaimed programming division to our uniquely American, young mun2 audience,” added Hidalgo. “This is a tremendous opportunity for Telemundo Sports to leverage its stellar programming and bring it to a new group of passionate sports enthusiasts.”

Hidalgo and Deportes Telemundo, along with Morales and mun2 network leadership, have collaborated to ensure that mun2 Sports meets the high standards of Telemundo’s sports coverage while maintaining the delivery, look and feel of the mun2 brand.
