Oportunidades de becas para estudiantes latinos

Programas de becas patrocinados por Ford están aceptando aplicaciones

    Un título universitario aumenta enormemente las posibilidades de encontrar un empleo, especialmente en el difícil mercado de hoy; sin embargo, encontrar la manera de pagar por una educación universitaria suele presentar nuevos desafíos. Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services ha apoyado la educación por más de 60 años, trabajando junto con organizaciones comunitarias para proporcionar oportunidades de becas para los estudiantes. El año pasado, Ford les otorgó becas a 227 estudiantes latinos en los EE.UU. y Puerto Rico. Todos los estudiantes que reciben becas patrocinadas por Ford pueden unirse a una red única basada en la web (www.fordscholars.org) con consejos sobre la carrera, información sobre becas y mucho más.

    Los siguientes son los programas de becas 2011 patrocinados por Ford para los estudiantes latinos que están aceptando solicitudes actualmente:

    • NAHJ Ford Blue Oval Scholars (Fecha límite: 28 de marzo, 2011)

    La Asociación Nacional de Periodistas Hispanos (National Association of Hispanic Journalists, NAHJ) ofrece becas para los estudiantes de periodismo. Estas becas de hasta $2,500 son otorgadas a los estudiantes que están siguiendo una carrera en periodismo impreso, de emisión, en línea y visual. Aquellos estudiantes de escuela secundaria que planean comenzar la universidad, o estudiantes universitarios y de posgrado pueden solicitar siempre y cuando tengan un GPA de no menos de un 2.0 y sean ciudadanos o residentes permanentes de los EE.UU. www.nahj.org 

    • Fondo Nacional de Becas LULAC (Fecha límite: 31 de marzo, 2011)

    Coordinado en el país por LNESC (LULAC National Educational Services Centers, Inc.), estas becas están disponibles para los estudiantes latinos en todos los niveles que buscan un titulo. Para solicitar, el estudiante debe ser un ciudadano o residente permanente de los EE.UU.; debe haber solicitado o estar matriculado en una universidad o programa de postgrado, incluyendo universidades de 2 años o programas vocacionales que ofrezcan un titulo de asociado; y deben demostrar un buen desempeño académico, como también un interés en actividades comunitarias y de liderazgo. www.lnesc.org

    • Programa de Becas de CHCI (Fecha límite: 16 de abril, 2011)

    El Instituto del Caucus Hispano del Congreso (Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, CHCI) les ofrece becas a los estudiantes latinos en los Estados Unidos quienes han participado en actividades de servicio público en sus comunidades y quienes demuestran el deseo de continuar su participación cívica en el futuro. Deben ser ciudadanos o residentes permanentes de los EE.UU. www.chci.org/scholarships

U.S. Naval Academy Accepting Applications for Summer STEM Program

    Applications are now being accepted through March 31 for the United States Naval Academy Summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Program 2011. The Summer STEM Program is held in three sessions: June 6-11 for rising 8th-9th graders, June 13-18 for rising 10th graders and June 20-25 for rising 11th graders.

    The academy’s Summer STEM Program is an overnight academic program designed for rising 8th-11th grade students in good academic standing who have an interest in math and science.

    The STEM Program gives students the opportunity to experience real-life applications of math and science principles through hands-on practical learning.  Students will learn from distinguished Naval Academy professors in world-class lab facilities that provide a unique learning environment outside the traditional classroom.

    Approximately 375 total students from around the U.S. will be accepted to STEM. All students selected to participate will receive a full scholarship to attend this academic summer program, but will be responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Southwestern College Announces more than $20,000 in new student Scholarships

    Southwestern College today announced more than $20,000 in new scholarships for students studying in its School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering. Funded by the LIPP Foundation and the Garden of Giving Endowment, the School is now accepting applications for the 14 awards ranging from $500 to $1,175. The deadline for scholarship applications is March 4, 2011.

    “Southwestern College is proud to offer more ways to support our hard-working students, their education and future,” Denise Whittaker, Interim Superintendent/President of Southwestern College, said. “Once graduating, our students will become leaders in their field and our community. It’s our job to make sure we prepare them for that responsibility.”

“These scholarships recognize and validate student academic achievement in addition to providing funds that students can use for books and tuition,” Kathy L. Tyner, Dean School of Mathematics, Science, and Engineering, said. “We are proud of the academic accomplishments of our students and strongly believe in their potential to contribute to the workforce of tomorrow.”

    E earlier this month, Southwestern College announced a $10,000 grant to continue its participation in the Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program, which helps students pursuing a career in biomedical research earn a four-year degree.
