Presidente Pérez Revela el Acta de la Beca Escolar de la Clase Media

Entre un alto incremento en la matrícula universitaria y una agobiante economía, la clase media de California está siendo exprimida de la oportunidad de alcanzar una educación superior. El presidente de la Asamblea John A. Pérez desea reanudar la promesa de una educación superior para los estudiantes de clase media y sus familias. Para reanudar esta promesa, el presidente Pérez ha presentado el Acta de la Beca Escolar de la Clase Media (www.middleclassscholarship.com) para reducir el costo de la matrícula en los sistemas universitarios de CSU, UC o colegios comunitarios en dos tercios, ahorrando a miles de estudiantes miles de dólares cada año. El presidente señaló que, no solamente los estudiantes merecen una oportunidad para recibir una educación universitaria de calidad, sino que invertir en los estudiantes de California es invertir en nuestro futuro colectivo. Por cada dólar que gastamos en la educación superior, el estado obtendría de vuelta $3 dólares por su inversión. El programa sería financiado cerrando el subsidio tributario que solamente beneficia a las corporaciones de fuera del estado.

High School Students Encouraged to Apply for the 13th Annual Cesar E. Chavez High School Essay Contest

Applications are now available for the 13th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Commemoration Committee High School Essay Contest. The essay contest, to honor the life and achievements of the late civil rights and labor leader, is opened to high school students in San Diego County.

“We are inspired by the 50th anniversary of the UFW this year and have created a choice of prompts that invite students to share their stories of strength and courage” said Andrea Fuentez, President, Cesar E. Chavez Commemoration Committee.

Students of all ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to enter by composing their essays on the following 2012 Committee theme: “Voices of Change: Empowering Children, Families and Community.”

Essays must be submitted with a completed application and should be postmarked no later than Thursday, March 1, 2012.

Students interested in participating can obtain an application and contest guidelines by visiting www.sdchavez.org.

The grand prize winner will be awarded $1000 and invited to read his or her essay on stage at the 14th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Memorial Breakfast on Monday, March 19, 2012. Winners from grades 9-12 will also be awarded $250 each and invited to attend the breakfast.

Mt. View/Beckwourth Branch Library Will Present Local Author Brenda Tolbert

 

The San Diego Public Library will host an author-talk featuring local author Brenda Tolbert. She will discuss her inspirational story, Hidden Jewels, the first installment of her three-part novel. This event, which is free and open to the public, is at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, at the Mt. View/Beckwourth Branch Library, located at 721 San Pasqual St., 92113. 

The library will be offering a free copy of the book to each family attending the event. The novel Hidden Jewels could best be described as a love letter to Tolbert’s grandmother.
