San Diego’s Southeastern areas have been neglected b y the City for too long, and we need a fresh perspective and a proven healer to help restore our faith in our leadership.
Martha Abraham is a registered nurse, on the frontlines of helping local families live better lives, and now she is bringing her focus to fixing City Hall.
Born in a refugee camp in Sudan and brought to San Diego as a baby, Martha earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing from San Diego State University, and later earned her Masters in Nursing. As a longtime resident of the District, she has seen first-hand the needs of our underserved communities who are at risk, as we saw during the flooding in January 2024.
Those floods, which devastated our District 4 area and left over 1,000 families without homes, was the direct result of years of neglected infrastructure improvements like the rest of the City receive. It was too little too late when the City reacted to the flooding by clearing debris from the flood channels. They should have done it before—not after—lives were affected.
Martha Abraham will fight for better funding for our communities, safe streets for our kids and families, and more attainable housing options to that workers can afford to live in their own neighborhoods.
The current City Council had mismanaged our City into a financial mess, with a $150 million budget deficit even after making drastic cuts and increasing taxes and fees. In fact, Councilman Henry Foster III voted to create parking fees at Balboa Park to help balance their inflated budget, but now the City is having to remove the fees after museums lost over $10 million from lower attendance.
Our budget should NOT be balanced on the backs of residents and visitors. Our leaders should fight to balance their budget, cut expensive middle managers, and protect vital community services like police, fire, parks, and libraries. We should expect better from our leaders.
District 4 is the most diverse of the City’s nine Council areas, with no racial or ethnic group making up a majority of the residents, but nearly half being Latinos, almost a quarter being Asian, and a nearly a fifth being black from various ethic backgrounds..
Martha Abraham is endorsed by the Sierra Club, the United Nurses Association of California, and Run Women Run, a local political action group aimed at inspiring women to seek public office.
