Students at Mar Vista High School are celebrating the opening of new facilities at their 60-year-old campus.

Modernization made possible by voter-approved Prop O funding has provided a new workspace for the Associated Student Body leadership. Construction also expanded and upgraded the Student Services building to include a counseling center, health clinic and learning center equipped with new computer stations.

“The renovations send a message to every student in the Sweetwater Union High School District – a message that we believe in their education and we believe in their success,” said Sweetwater Board Member Arlie N. Ricasa. “These new facilities will be the catalyst for creating a passionate, emotional change in our District.” Ricasa is a graduate of Mar Vista High and returned to her Alma Mater for the inaugural.

At the heart of campus, students are also enjoying a new open air lunch quad where they can be sheltered during mid-day meal and nutrition breaks while they enjoy the sea breeze. An annex classroom building on campus has also been transformed into a 2,200-square-foot parent center.

“As our only high school in Imperial Beach, Mar Vista graduates have great pride in their school,” said Superintendent Jesus Gandara. “Now, the investment of $11.6 million in Prop O construction is giving current and future generations of Mariners a better-quality learning environment.”

Proposition O is funding facilities improvements to address the critical and urgent needs of the 32 schools in the Sweet-water Union High School District. New construction and renovations ensure that the 42,000 middle and high school students and 27,000 adult learners districtwide are attending safe, healthy and quality schools.
