Carolinae Dale of the First United Methodist Church reads a Dr. Seuss story to the children of Hazel Cook Elementary

On Friday, March 2nd, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday by reading some of his books to the children of Hazel Cook Elementary. Having the chance to interact with the children in their classrooms was fun and exciting, but it was also a great way to be involved in our community to support the very important task of educating children.

Volunteers from First UMC Chula Vista joined together with volunteers from different service institutions, such as fire fighters, police, people from the Coast Guard, to share the gift of Dr. Seuss. We shared with the children that reading in not an obligation, but rather a privilege to enjoy.

Seeing the faces of awe as children dreamed of all “the places they’ll go,” sitting with the kids and sharing smiles, watching their faces of disgust as they imagined themselves eating green eggs and ham, watching the children joining in on the reading because some of them already knew the words by heart…the whole experience was priceless for both parties, the readers and the listeners.

Words can bring expectation as we look for the mother of a little bird. Words bring us closer to nature, to family and to our community when we partner together in this privilege of educating our children!

Thank you, Dr. Seuss.
